Learning Communities
  • Tier 1:  Support instructor to create flexible access to their lectures
  • Tier 2:  Train tutors in different learning communities to adapt digitized lectures to specific learning needs
  • Tier 3:  Sharpen Practitioner skills via a feedback loop

Example: Smartpen Pre-Algebra Lecture Notes

Below are possible challenges faced by students from different learning communities.  This is not representative of all students in each community. Many students can belong to multiple communities.

  • DSPS
    • Some students say they question their abilities, need extra time to process information, require direct instruction with multi-sensory options.
Want to be seen as capable
    • Tutor can provide direct instruction with guidance from the instructor’s digital lecture
  • EOPS/Calworks
    • Some students say they are over extended, need multisensory material to support a busy life, on-demand access to lectures and class materials.
Don’t want to be left behind
    • Student can virtually hear/see the class lecture she/he had to miss
  • Umoja & Puente
    • Some students say they are alienated, unheard, unseen, not appreciated.
      Want to be empowered
    • Student can be asked what they understand from the video
  • ESL
    • Some students say they need translation, time to understand a new culture and language.  Want to feel less isolated
    • Student can review the lecture and ask others about cultural references stated by the instructor
  • Undocumented & Dreamers
    • Some students say they feel unsafe, don’t want to be exposed, don’t want to attract attention, need to blend into the class.
      Want help without standing out
    • Student can review lecture without having to expose themselves
  • Veterans
    • Some students say they have PTSD, easily triggered, self doubt, facing a new reality, need to know they are still valued.
Want to feel respected and know they can still be of service
    • Student can share lecture and knowledge with other vets
  • General Student
    • Performing at the bottom third of the class, but doesn’t ask for help.

Want to be a better practitioner.  Participates in a feedback loop using recorded lectures & input from learning community students
    • Instructor can learn about their own cultural assumptions that can be alienating or not shared by other cultures
